I is for Inspiration and Insecurities #AtoZChallenge

The Blogging from A-Z Challenge continues today. Throughout April I’m posting about my life as a writer, including my inspirations, frustrations and celebrations. Inspiration I’m inspired by all sorts of things, such as nature, art, music and poetry. I get lots of ideas for fantasy stories from researching ancient mythology, folklore and philosophy. I also get inspiration for sci-fi and dystopian stories from articles about scientific breakthroughs and advanced technology. News stories, radio interviews and overheard conversations also spark my imagination and sometimes develop into interesting ideas. Today, I discuss the inspiration behind my story “Sea of Sorrows” and share […]

You can find out more about it here. This week’s theme is:  Author Life Share some of *your* favourite things. Show us what inspires you! The pile of books to the right is from my own collection […]

I is for Imagination and the Impossible #atozchallenge

I is for Imagination and the Impossible #atozchallenge

Throughout April I’m taking part in the Blogging from A-Z Challenge.  I’ll be posting every day (except Sundays) on my chosen theme of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass by Lewis Carroll. For the letter I, I’m discussing the theme of ‘Imagination and the Impossible’ in Caroll’s works. When Alice falls asleep and dreams of Wonderland, she enters a world of her own imagination, in which she discovers that very few things are impossible.    Quotes For, you see, so many out-of-the-way things had happened lately, that Alice had begun to think that very few things indeed were […]

Inspirational People: J K Rowling

Inspirational People: J K Rowling

Photograph by Daniel Ogren-[source] J. K Rowling was just an ordinary woman trying to make a living when one day a train ride changed her life:All of a sudden the idea for Harry just appeared in my mind’s eye. I can’t tell you why or what triggered it. But I saw the idea of Harry and the wizard school very plainly. I suddenly had this basic idea of a boy who didn’t know who he was, who didn’t know he was a wizard until he got his invitation to wizard school. I have never been so excited by an idea. […]

Creative Project Ideas

Creative Project Ideas

Here I have compiled a list of creative project ideas for rainy days. They can be done just for fun or to help you build your portfolio. Writing If you enjoy writing poetry, why not set yourself a challenge to write one poem a day for a set period of time, like one month. Afterwards you will have 30 poems or more that may need tweaking, but it’s a start. After you’ve edited them you could sort them into different themes and produce an anthology to give as a gift to your family and friends, or you could just print […]

On Waiting for Inspiration

On Waiting for Inspiration

If you’re a writer (or any other kind of creative artist) you will understand the importance of inspiration. Without being inspired it is difficult to write or make something that isn’t completely drab and awful. But there are times when we can’t wait for inspiration to strike, like when we have a deadline to meet or we have to meet our word goal for NaNoWriMo. The truth is, if you sit around waiting for your muse to appear, it will probably never happen. It’s like the ‘tomorrow never comes’ saying. If you keep putting off your work until you have […]

Autumnal Art & Craft Ideas

Autumnal Art & Craft Ideas

Now that the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness is upon us, you may be feeling a bit down. The summer sun has vanished, to be replaced by torrential rain and chilly winds. The trees and plants that were recently blossoming and blooming are starting to look brown, bare and shrivelled and your shorts, flipflops and bikinis have been confined to the back of the wardrobe. Oh and your stuck in work or school again too! Now it’s just downhill from here until next spring isn’t it? Not at all! Although you may have found summer fun and inspiring, there’s […]
