I’ve read 23 of the Top 100 Books

There is currently a meme going around on facebook which is a list of the UK’s favourite 100 books and the idea is to count which ones you have read. The list is based on the Guardian’s 100 books you can’t live without and the BBC Big Read Top 100 lists, but has significant differences to both. According to the facebook meme, the BBC claimed that most people have only read 6 of the books on this list. However, I can’t actually find any evidence on their website that they said that, and it wouldn’t really make sense considering they asked […]

NaNoWrimo: Day 22

NaNoWrimo: Day 22

Wow. Today so far I have written over 7000 words. I can’t believe it, it’s the most I’ve ever written in one go. I only hope I can keep it up now and reach that finish line. I have 16318 words to go and 8 days left to do it in. Out of that I’m working for 3 full days and 2 half days, so basically I only have 4 days where I can get some proper writing done, unless I manage to get lots done in the evening, which is unlikely. But I am determined to reach my goal. […]

NaNoWrimo: Day 19

NaNoWrimo: Day 19

Wow, I can’t believe it is already day 19 of NaNoWriMo. That means there are only 11 days left, eek! Today has been a pretty good day because I wrote over 5000 words, which is the most I’ve written for a fiction project in any one day since the beginning of my existence (probably). So that’s the good news. The bad news is I am still 5000 words behind my goal. But I’m not despairing. I only have to write about 2200 words a day to finish on time, and that’s not impossible as long (as I don’t miss any […]

On Waiting for Inspiration

On Waiting for Inspiration

If you’re a writer (or any other kind of creative artist) you will understand the importance of inspiration. Without being inspired it is difficult to write or make something that isn’t completely drab and awful. But there are times when we can’t wait for inspiration to strike, like when we have a deadline to meet or we have to meet our word goal for NaNoWriMo. The truth is, if you sit around waiting for your muse to appear, it will probably never happen. It’s like the ‘tomorrow never comes’ saying. If you keep putting off your work until you have […]

The Magic of Harry Potter: 7 Reasons Why I love the Books

The Magic of Harry Potter: 7 Reasons Why I love the Books

Let’s make it clear that I’m a BIG Harry Potter fan. I started reading the books when I was about ten or eleven, and as my birthday is the day before Harry’s (30th July) I could really relate to him, being almost the same age. I can remember reading it to my little sister and doing all the voices, dressing up as Dumbledore for her birthday party, going to see the first film and being so excited that the world I imagined was coming to life. I remember camping with my friends at high school on the night that The […]

Thoughts on Remembrance Day

Thoughts on Remembrance Day

[source] I thought I would take time out from Nano to pay respect to our fallen war heroes today. I think most of us know someone whose life has been touched by war, whether it’s a great-grandparent who fought in the First World War or a loved one who is away in Afghanistan right now; it affects us all. Many of us wouldn’t be here today if it were not for the soldiers who fought and died for our freedom. Sometimes though, when we glorify them as heroes we forget what they were: people just like us. They were sons […]

NaNoWrimo: Day 14

NaNoWrimo: Day 14

Urgh, I have seriously fallen behind with NaNoWriMo this week. Instead of taking responsibility for it, I would like to blame my partner. Before November I made him promise that when I got home from work he would be firm and make me write my 1700 words before allowing me to have dinner and watch a film with him. “You need to be strict with me”, I said. “If I don’t meet my wordcount then you can’t let me relax with you alright?”“Sure,” he replied. I had faith that he was going to be firm and dicipline me, so that […]

NaNoWriMo: Day 8

NaNoWriMo: Day 8

Today it wasn’t so easy to keep writing. I only wrote about 1650 words and I usually get over 2000. But still, it’s only early evening at the moment. I usually find that I can boost my word count up a lot if I write between 9pm and 12am, so maybe I will come back to it later tonight. I need a break now, I can feel myself getting weary from it. Still, I have 13795 words, that’s 28% of my novel completed, over a quarter done and dusted. It’s slow work for me, my creativity comes and goes in […]
