There are joyous revelations and successes that make us yell “Yippee!” as we are catapulted high into the sky: I figured out my villain’s motivation! I just thought of the best twist EVER! X is for Xesturgy (with free editing checklist!) #AtoZChallenge

The Blogging from A-Z Challenge continues today. Throughout April I’m posting about my life as a writer, including my inspirations, frustrations and celebrations. X is always a tricky letter, and as this is my 6th time doing the A-Z, I’ve already covered most of the obvious ‘X’ words. So, I had to go searching for a new word that would fit my writing related theme. I eventually stumbled across ‘Xesturgy’. Xesturgy means the act of ‘polishing’ something (usually stones) and originates from Ancient Greek. Xesturgy is a vital part of the writing process. A first draft is never ready to […]

W is for Worldbuilding (with free chart!) #AtoZChallenge

The Blogging from A-Z Challenge continues today. Throughout April I’m posting about my life as a writer, including my inspirations, frustrations and celebrations. Worldbuilding is one of my favourite parts of the writing process. I thoroughly enjoy constructing my own imaginary worlds with their own unique history and physical features. I draw inspiration for my fantasy settings from mythology, fairytales and the history of ancient civilisations. When I’m writing science-fiction, I research all the technical details about space travel, terraforming planets, and so on. It’s so much fun and I always learn tons of new information in the process. My […]

V is for Visualising Victory #AtoZChallenge

The Blogging from A-Z Challenge continues today. Throughout April I’m posting about my life as a writer, including my inspirations, frustrations and celebrations. The quote above, from Muhammad Ali’s The Soul of a Butterfly * is one of my favourites. I generally have no trouble with the first part-conceiving ideas and goals. I’m inspired by the things I see and hear every day and things come to me all the time. It’s the self-belief part that I struggle with. One of the things I do to try to convince my ‘heart’ that I can accomplish my goals, is to visualise […]

U is for Update and Unmasking #AtoZChallenge

The Blogging from A-Z Challenge continues today. Throughout April I’m posting about my life as a writer, including my inspirations, frustrations and celebrations. Update I thought I’d share a brief update about where I’m at with some of my writing projects. Science Fantasy Novel (WiP) I’ve written around 30,000 words (about half) of a YA science fantasy novel that is best described as ‘Once Upon a Time meets Star Wars’. It doesn’t have a title yet, but I sometimes refer to it as ‘Glasswalker’ or ‘The Dream Maker’s Daughter’. It’s loosely based on fairytales and fantasy stories such as Alice […]

T is for Tools #AtoZChallenge

The Blogging from A-Z Challenge continues today. Throughout April I’m posting about my life as a writer, including my inspirations, frustrations and celebrations. Today, I’m sharing some of the tools that I use for writing. Traditional Tools Pens! Most writers have hundreds of them and I’m no exception. I have ball point pens and rollerballs in various colours for when I want to get my ideas down quickly. My favourites are Parker Jotters and Uni-ball UB-157 Eye Fine Rollerballs. I come up with my most creative ideas when I use a fountain pen. There’s just something about the smooth indigo […]
