This week I have a glorius holiday from work and I’m definately making the most of it. I actually plotted the YA paranormal fantasy that I’d been daydreaming about. Not only that, I did loads of research into African folklore, mythology and shamanism, fleshed out all of my characters a lot more and then I had a revelation. I realised that the story could not be told in one book and I decided to make it into a trilogy-the ‘Wild Spirits’ trilogy. I came up with working titles for each of the books: ‘Roar of the Blood’, ‘Roar of the […]
There is currently a meme going around on facebook which is a list of the UK’s favourite 100 books and the idea is to count which ones you have read. The list is based on the Guardian’s 100 books you can’t live without and the BBC Big Read Top 100 lists, but has significant differences to both. According to the facebook meme, the BBC claimed that most people have only read 6 of the books on this list. However, I can’t actually find any evidence on their website that they said that, and it wouldn’t really make sense considering they asked […]
Let’s make it clear that I’m a BIG Harry Potter fan. I started reading the books when I was about ten or eleven, and as my birthday is the day before Harry’s (30th July) I could really relate to him, being almost the same age. I can remember reading it to my little sister and doing all the voices, dressing up as Dumbledore for her birthday party, going to see the first film and being so excited that the world I imagined was coming to life. I remember camping with my friends at high school on the night that The […]

The opening lines of a novel or short story are probably the most important. They are the first thing that will be read, and readers will decide from that whether they want to continue, so you have to set them up well to make people want to read on. You don’t want to start with a boring paragraph of description. It has to be something that tells the reader some crucial information, introduces an unusual situation and is enticing enough to make them want to find out what happens next. Here is a compilation of my favourite opening lines […]
Lewis Carroll is one of my favourite authors of all time. Here I’ve compiled a selection of my favourite quotes for your enjoyment 🙂 “Always speak the truth, think before you speak, and write it down afterwards.” “Begin at the beginning and go on till you come to the end; then stop.” “Everything’s got a moral, if only you can find it.” “I can’t go back to yesterday – because I was a different person then.” “One of the secrets of life is that all that is really worth the doing is what we do for others.” “She generally […]
