Book Blogger Hop: Impossible to Choose?

Posted 12th May 2018 by Tizzy Brown in BOOKS, Memes & Tags / 🗨3 Comments

Book Blogger Hop at www.dustingthesoul.comToday I’m taking part in the Book Blogger Hop, a weekly hop hosted by Billy B at Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer (originally created by Jennifer at  Crazy-For-Books). You can see the hop schedule here.

“Each week the hop will start on a Friday and end on Thursday. There will be a weekly prompt featuring a book related question. The hop’s purpose is to give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, befriend other bloggers, and receive new followers to your own blog.”

Could you ever pick a favourite book or is it like choosing a favourite child?

(submitted by Elizabeth @ Silver’s Reviews)

It’s definitely like choosing a favourite child (or what I imagine it would be like, since I only have one). Like any parent, I love all my darlings for different reasons.

I have some firm childhood favourites, such as Harry Potter (the whole series), Roald Dahl’s Danny the Champion of the World and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. They are special to me mainly because they captured my imagination and I associate them with nostalgic, magical feelings.

Then I have some favourite literary classics that I fell in love with at school and university: Hamlet, The Colour Purple, Frankenstein, and so on. These are favourites because they inspired me and spoke to me on an intellectual level at a time when I was still discovering my identity and trying to make sense of the world.

Then there are more recent favourites that I discovered as an adult, such as The Hunger Games, Daughter of Smoke and Bone and my current obsession, Strange the Dreamer. These are the books that I read just for fun and hooked me because of the exciting plot, beautiful language or relatable characters.

So I guess the reason why I struggle to choose one specific all-time favourite is that my identity has changed so much over the last (almost) three decades to the extent that I think of ‘childhood Tizzy’ and ‘teenage Tizzy’ almost as different people to this version of myself, so I feel I need to have separate categories of favourites. My favourite books from each stage of my life will always be special to me.

The series that I have loved the longest and most deeply is probably Harry Potter, but I can’t narrow it down to a particular book!

What about you? Is it easy to name your favourite book?

  1. I have favorites, not just one. Slaughterhouse Five, Stranger in a Strange Land, Camus’s The Stranger, Lord of the Rings, The Once and Future King, and The Man in the Maze (which is the first “adult” SciFi book I remember reading). Those books are just the ones that popped into my head without thinking hard.

    I read a lot.
