K is for Khaki #AtoZChallenge

Today I’m continuing with the A-Z Blogging Challenge. This year I’m doing an A-Z of Colours. I’ll be doing a variety of posts, including haikus and poems, arts and crafts, fashion and beauty, recipes and more!

For the letter ‘K’ I have chosen the colour Khaki. Khaki describes both a light shade of yellow-brown similar to beige and a drab green military colour. The word comes from Urdu and means ‘soil-coloured’. It originally came to English via the British Indian Army.

Keep reading to discover the symbolism behind this colour and learn more about the khaki fashion and beauty trend.

Symbolism

Khaki is associated with the military, war and camouflage. It also symbolises the earth, soil and desert, as well as being linked to survival. If you’d like to learn more about why khaki is used in the military, this article has some interesting information.

Complementary colour: Pink/mauve

Khaki in Fashion

Khaki is a neutral colour that goes with almost anything. Because of its military use, khaki clothing creates an edgy unisex look that suggests toughness. I think it looks especially good when contrasted with more traditionally ‘feminine’ colours (like pink) and combined with glamorous accessories such as high heels. There are so many ways to wear it. You can throw an oversized khaki cargo jacket over a cute dress, wear baggy combat trousers with a fun crop top or pair khaki skinny jeans or chinos with a fitted blouse or vest. Here are some great examples:

I think the key is to not overdo it-pair it with either neutral pieces and add some contrasting accessories if you want. You could add some subtle makeup to compliment the look, such as a khaki toned nail polish or eye shadow (this looks great on green or brown eyes). For eyes, try Burberry eyeshadow in ‘khaki’ (08), Dior 5 colour couture eyeshadow palette in ‘khaki’ or M.A.C ‘Sumptuous Olive’ eyeshadow. For nails, check out Chanel Le Vernis nail polish in ‘Khaki Vert’ or Essie nail polish in ‘Sew Psyched’.

Hmm, I really don’t think I like the colour as make up or nail varnish! It’s another colour I think looks good on other people, but I don’t like for myself.
