#IWSG April 2018: Writing Through the Storm

Posted 4th April 2018 by Tizzy Brown in Creative Writing, Memes & Tags / 🗨4 Comments

The Insecure Writer's Support Group badgeAfter a long break from writing, I finally started to get back into it this year. I decided to rejoin the Insecure Writer’s Support Group to boost my confidence and encourage myself to engage with the writing community. The IWSG post on the first Wednesday of every month.

This month’s co-hosts are Olga Godim,Chemist Ken, Renee Scattergood, and Tamara Narayan

When your writing life is a bit cloudy or filled with rain, what do you do to dig down and keep on writing?

Well, I have to admit that this is something I struggle with. In the past, when my writing hasn’t been going so well, I have often thrown in the towel and abandoned a project, thinking that I’m simply not good enough to complete it. However, more recently I’ve been less critical of myself. I read a really helpful book called The INFJ Writer, by Lauren Sapala (review coming soon) that has helped me tackle some of my self-esteem issues.

Now, when I hit a stumbling block, I try one of the following things:

  • Re-read something I wrote in the past that I’m proud of
  • Remind myself of compliments I’ve received about my writing
  • Take a look at my list of ‘reasons to keep writing’. This list includes things like ‘I’m the only person who can tell this story’ and ‘to make those who believe in me proud’.
  • Discuss my concerns with a friend or online writing buddy
  • Put my project to one side and do something else creative (bake, paint, etc.)
  • Read a book of a completely different genre to what I’m working on
  • Watch a feel-good film like Singin’ In the Rain to cheer myself up
  • Put on some loud music and dance!

Then I come back to my writing and try again. Not every day is going to be a brilliant writing day, but I try to focus on my small victories. I also make self-care a priority these days, so if I’m feeling too ill or stressed to write, I take a break and look after myself, then come back to writing when I’m feeling better.

How do you find the strength to keep writing when you’re going through a rough patch?

A Blogger’s Journal from Paperchase

A Blogger’s Journal from Paperchase

One of my greatest weaknesses is stationary and in particular, I cannot resist a good notebook. I have separate notebooks dedicated to almost every area of my life, all of them themed. Yes, I should probably combine them into one all-purpose notebook like bullet journalers do, but the truth is I’m just not a one notebook kinda girl. There are too many great designs not to use them all! My latest find was ‘A Blogger’s Journal‘ from Paperchase. It’s a notebook to help you plan and track everything for your blog, including upcoming posts, social media strategy and goals for the […]

“The Sun’s Return”, a poem inspired by Lincolnshire skies

“The Sun’s Return”, a poem inspired by Lincolnshire skies

When city-dwellers visit the Lincolnshire countryside, they often express their amazement that there is “so much sky”. My home county, the second largest in England, is characterised by wide open fields stretching right to the horizon. Apart from a beautiful cluster of hills known as “the Wolds” and the aptly-named “Steep Hill” in Lincoln, the area is mostly flat, allowing us to gaze upon some of the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets in the country. Below is a photograph I took of a sunset back in October (left) alongside a photograph of this morning’s sunrise (right). I just love the striking […]

#atozchallenge C is for Clothing

#atozchallenge C is for Clothing

Today is the third day of the 2016 A-Z Blogging Challenge! The aim is to write a post for every day of the month except for Sundays, with each post representing a different letter of the alphabet. This year, since I’ve just become a mum for the first time, my theme is: ‘an A-Z of Newborn Care’. I’ll be talking about all the highs and lows of parenting, sharing things that have been useful for me and posting some cute pictures. For the letter ‘C’ I have chosen to talk about Clothing. How much do you really need? There are so many […]

#LoveAThon Mini Challenge 3: Book Spine Poetry

#LoveAThon Mini Challenge 3: Book Spine Poetry

For this challenge we were asked to create some book spine poems, which are poems created by mixing and matching book titles from our shelves. This was my favourite challenge last year so I was looking forward to having another go. It was harder this time as I didn’t want to use many of the same titles and my stash of physical books hasn’t grown much over the past year. But I did manage one short poem: The Scorch Trials A million suns catching fire, Fahrenheit 451, Fever, panic, desperation.  Vanishing girls wither, fade Gone forever.  What do you think? Feel […]

#LoveAThon Mini Challenge 1: Mix and Match

#LoveAThon Mini Challenge 1: Mix and Match

It’s time for the first mini-challenge of the 2016 Love-a-Thon hosted by Alexa Loves Books, The Novel Hermit, Stay Bookish and The Daily Prophecy. For this challenge, we were asked to mash-up a non-bookish hobby, passion, talent or fandom with our bookish life. We could do this through photos, art, videos and so on. I decided to mix my bookish life with my interest in fashion. I love creating collages on Polyvore and over the years I’ve created a number of ‘sets’ based on some of my favourite books and literary characters. Here are some of my favourites: (Click to […]

Triple Chocolate Christmas Cookies!

Triple Chocolate Christmas Cookies!

Yesterday I felt like doing some Christmas baking so I had a go at making some triple chocolate cookies. They turned out pretty well, even if I do say so myself. Kids would easily be able to join in with this recipe and the cookies would make nice gifts for family and friends if decorated and boxed. Below is the recipe I used: Equipment Measuring scales2-3 baking trays2 mixing bowls2 mixing spoonsWhiskTeaspoonSieveSpatula or knifeRolling pinChristmas cookie cutters (or a sharp knife) Ingredients 200g softened butter 300g soft brown sugar 300g self-raising flour 300g milk chocolate chips, M&Ms or smarties  80g […]
